Ursa Major is linked to the story of Callisto, a beautiful maiden who caught the eye of Zeus, the king of the gods. Zeus transformed himself into the likeness of Artemis, the goddess of the hunt and a companion of Callisto, to seduce her. As a result of their union, Callisto bore a son named Arcas.

Hera, Zeus' wife, became enraged by her husband's infidelity and transformed Callisto into a bear. In her bear form, Callisto roamed the forests for many years, until one day, she encountered her son, Arcas, while he was out hunting. Unaware of the bear's true identity, Arcas prepared to strike her down with his spear. Zeus, witnessing the impending tragedy, intervened by transforming Arcas into a bear as well and lifting both bears into the heavens, where they became the constellations Ursa Major and Ursa Minor.
