The most famous tale linked to Lyra involves Orpheus, a legendary musician and poet. Orpheus was gifted a lyre by the god, Apollo, which he played with extraordinary skill. His music had the power to enchant all who heard it, even animals and trees.
Orpheus used his lyre to charm Hades, the god of the underworld, in his quest to retrieve his beloved wife, Eurydice, from the realm of the dead. He played such hauntingly beautiful melodies that even the stone-hearted Hades was moved to tears and agreed to let Eurydice return to the world of the living, on one condition: Orpheus must not look back until they reached the surface.
Tragically, just before reaching the surface, Orpheus couldn't resist the urge to glance back at Eurydice, breaking the pact with Hades. As a consequence, Eurydice was whisked back to the underworld forever. Heartbroken, Orpheus wandered the earth, playing mournful tunes on his lyre until he was torn apart by frenzied maenads, followers of the god, Dionysus.
Moved by Orpheus's grief and musical talent, Zeus placed his lyre in the heavens as the constellation Lyra.
