Corona Borealis, or the Northern Crown, is associated with various tales. One popular story tells of Princess Ariadne, daughter of King Minos of Crete. Ariadne fell in love with the Athenian hero, Theseus, who ventured into the Labyrinth to slay the Minotaur. To aid him, Ariadne gave Theseus a ball of thread to help him find his way out. Theseus emerged victorious and sailed away with Ariadne.

However, Theseus eventually abandoned Ariadne on the island of Naxos. Heartbroken and alone, Ariadne was discovered by the god, Dionysus, who fell in love with her. As a wedding gift, Dionysus gave Ariadne a golden crown, which he later placed in the sky as a constellation to immortalize her memory.
