Canis Major is often associated with the faithful canine companion of Orion, the legendary hunter. According to one myth, Canis Major represents the loyal hunting dog, Laelaps, gifted to Orion by the gods. Laelaps was renowned for its speed and ferocity, always by Orion's side during his epic quests and adventures.

Another tale links Canis Major to the story of Icarus and his father, Daedalus. In this version, Canis Major represents the faithful hound, Maera, who belonged to Icarus before his tragic flight. Maera, mourning the loss of his master, was placed among the stars as a tribute to his unwavering loyalty.
